LIBERTY OF LONDON
LONDON
Although I sadly have to admit that London has gradually lost a great deal of it’s character over recent decades, there is still a plethora of classic architecture and historic buildings to be found here. When I first moved to the capital I found exploring London’s diversity of districts a never-ending delight.
Art galleries and museums were a magical draw to my artistic eye, plus my early working life would help me in navigating the city and it’s streets. Because my work was based in the West End of London I began to meet many people of various professions and types of business in that area, including many respected tailoring names from the famous Savile Row. In later years I decided to create a collage-style canvas, collectively loosely illustrating some of the stores in Savile Row. I also added to the scene a long-standing tailor friend Leonard Logsdail whom trained there and went on to set up an extremely successful London clientele base, before moving his business to a midtown Manhattan address in New York.
When working in the Covent Garden area of the capital, or socialising, I would often pass the iconic Savoy Hotel in the Strand. This classic hotel has long been associated with the great and the good whom have stayed there - everyone from Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, Sinatra, Judy Garland, Dietrich, Burton & Taylor, to The Beatles. So when deciding which London hotel I should paint, The Savoy was an automatic choice.
