RICHMOND-UPON-THAMES (Surrey)
Richmond-upon-Thames is an area I have often captured on my canvases. I know every inch of this town and it’s regal roots. Named after the Yorkshire place of the same name, Richmond once had it’s own palace built by Henry VII at the turn of the 16th century.
Although not so ancient, I have often painted scenes of the Grade I listed Richmond Bridge which is a main focal point for the many visitors that flock here, with it’s nearby sloping landscaped lawns and public benches which overlook the River Thames. The Royal Barge ‘Gloriana’ which featured in the Queen’s Jubilee was built by master boatbuilder Mark Edwards whose business is based by the bridge. Besides the said vessel, I have also been tempted to put brush strokes to nearby scenes such as the ever-popular White Cross pub, the quaintly paved narrow alley called Brewer’s Lane, and the historic Richmond Theatre which puts on many pre-West End shows.
The town’s other main glory is it’s Richmond Hill views, famously captured by the great British artist JMW Turner - with it’s sweeping panoramic vistas over the bend in the River Thames. Partly down the hill is the attractively turreted Petersham Hotel which I have enjoyed painting several times, a very popular wedding reception venue with it’s equally fine river views.
Walking distance from here via Petersham Meadows and hidden away off the Thames towpath, is the horticultural gem called Petersham Nurseries. Besides it’s retail in plants and garden-related wares, it also has a relaxing restaurant & café, fountain and statues which again I have previously captured on my easel. Ironically the nurseries have been captured on film too, just a few years ago Hollywood producer Woody Allen shot scenes here for one of his movies.
